After probably one of the most exiting road rally’s for a very long time the Lampeter and District motor club organised Rali Bro Caron result went right down to the final stages of the event when Dylan Davies and his co-driver Dale Furniss took victory by a mere ten seconds after some 100 miles of classic West Wales lanes.

The event was the opening round of the Welsh Road Rally Championship and attracted a capacity entry of 90 competing cars within a few days of the regs appearing, a credit to the organisers no doubt for putting on top class events in the past.

With the action getting underway at midnight the times were very close between the top competing cars, mostly all old Ford Escort’s competing against far more modern cars but showing them the way to set top times.

The halfway petrol halt at Aberaeron saw Phil Mk1 Evans / Steve Herbert leading the event by a slender five seconds from Dylan Davies / Dale Furniss with Daniel Jones ( Lwni ) and Dorian Evans ( Big Dor ) again a mere 9 seconds adrift of Davies, the top eight cars at petrol were all Escort’s, however things were starting to go wrong for the rally leader when the alternator started playing up as they approached Aberaeron and a few miles into the second half Phil and Steve were forced to retire while leading the rally.

Back at the finish at the rally HQ in the Black Lion Royal Hotel in Lampeter at 7am the winning crew were announced as Dylan Davies / Dale Furniss making it three Rali Bro Caron wins on the trot, however Dylan need to go one better again to catch up with his father Gary as he has won it on four consecutive years in 2005 – 06 - 07 and 2008 in the same car as Dylan won it on last weekend.

Runner up position went to Daniel Jones / Dorian Evans with a deficit of some 10 seconds in their Escort. Meirion Evans / Stuart Merry finished 3rd and second in class in another Escort after setting some very quick times, Gethin Morgan / Dlwyn John took 4th overall while just 14 seconds behind them were Richard Jarman / Iwan Jones. The first non Escort to finish were Mark GT Roberts / Steve Price in a VW Golf.

The experts class was won by Steve Knibbs / Gerwyn Barry in a Vauxhall Corsa, the semi expert class winning crew were Owain Evans / Arfon Griffiths in a Ford Escort. The novice winners were Jamie Jones / Jonathan Kennedy in a Citroen Saxo. The best mixed crew award went to Steven John Williams / Lowri Davies , Under 1400 award winners were Richard Williams / Richard Edwards, Dafydd Evans took the youngest navigator award.

The event saw 64 crews finish the rally back at Lampeter and the organizers would like to thank all marshals who helped with the time controls, all residents en route and farmers who let them use their farm tracks, but the celebrations continued well into the morning for Dylan and Dale and can they make it 4 wins on the trot on the 2012 Bro Caron only time will tell.
